We're the open-admission animal services agency for the unincorporated areas of San Diego County. We exist to protect the health, safety, and welfare of people and animals. We take in nearly 7,000 lost, homeless, and abandoned animals each year and we need your help to save lives!

Department of Animal Services 2024 Year Review

In 2024, we are proud to celebrate the success of our mission to help animals in need. Over the past year, we cared for more than 5,883 animals, with 3,169 finding their for homes. Many others were transferred to rescues or reunited with their owners. Our team responded to over 50,000 patrol calls for service, and our dedicated volunteers generously contributed more than 22,000 hours to support our cause. Additionally, 194 dogs participated in our "Dogs Day Out" program, bringing joy to both the dogs and their communities. We couldn't have achieved these milestones without the incredible support of our volunteers, partners, and community-thank you for making 2024 a year of positive change for so many lives.

  • 3,169 Adoptions & 1,073 Rescue Exits
  • 1,194 went on a Dogs Day Out

We care for nearly 7,000 cats, dogs, livestock and exotic animals each year that are lost, abandoned or neglected. Our dedicated and compassionate volunteers are essential to this mission.

Santee Shelter

Coming Soon: New Animal Shelter

The County of San Diego is currently in design for a new 20,000 square feet Animal Care Shelter in the City of Santee.  Construction is scheduled to commence in June 2024 and is expected to be completed by November 2025.
